Job Description: Veterinary Research Laboratory Animal Pathologist
Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and qualified Laboratory Animal Pathologist to join our veterinary research team. The Laboratory Animal Pathologist will be responsible for conducting comprehensive pathological evaluations of laboratory animals, analyzing and interpreting data, and providing valuable insights to support our research efforts. The ideal candidate should possess a strong background in veterinary pathology, with expertise in laboratory animal medicine and pathology. This role requires excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform necropsies and histopathological evaluations on laboratory animals to identify and characterize disease processes and pathological changes.
- Conduct thorough microscopic examination and interpretation of tissue samples obtained from laboratory animals.
- Generate accurate and detailed pathology reports summarizing findings and observations, including appropriate recommendations or suggestions.
- Collaborate closely with research scientists, veterinarians, and other team members to provide expert advice and guidance on laboratory animal pathology-related matters.
- Participate in research study design, providing insights into appropriate animal models, sample collection, and evaluation criteria.
- Assist in the development and implementation of experimental protocols, ensuring ethical standards and animal welfare guidelines are met.
- Monitor and evaluate animal health and welfare, identifying potential disease outbreaks or adverse events, and providing appropriate intervention strategies.
- Stay updated with current scientific literature, veterinary pathology advancements, and regulatory requirements pertaining to laboratory animal research.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of laboratory animal research databases, ensuring accurate and organized records of pathology findings.
- Provide training and guidance to research staff on laboratory animal handling, sample collection techniques, and pathology-related procedures.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
- Board certification or eligibility for board certification in veterinary pathology (ACVP or ECVP).
- Extensive experience in laboratory animal pathology, including necropsy, histopathology, and microscopy techniques.
- In-depth knowledge of laboratory animal models, anatomy, physiology, and related pathology.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data and make accurate diagnoses.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse team of professionals.
- Attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while adhering to strict deadlines.
- Proficiency in using laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and other relevant software applications.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements and guidelines governing laboratory animal research, including AAALAC, IACUC, and GLP.
